A light meter tells the camera where to read the light from. In the two pictures we put the light meter in diffiredn places, in the first we told the light meter to meter the screen and it did that is why you can see the screen very good and not my partner. In the second picture we told the camera to meter my partner and that is why you can see her better than in the first picture. Spot metering can help when you would like something to be in focus, and with more light.
